Copenhagen (11/19/98) - It only takes a Palm Pilot, some
software, and 10 seconds to copy certain types of car keys
for infrared door locks.
...
In a few seconds, PC World copied the frequency of an
infrared car key over to a 3Com Palm Pilot computer. The
computer was equipped with an infrared communications port
and a program which simulates the behavior of a television
remote control.

In practice the copying is done by holding the key next to the
infrared port and letting the program "learn" the frequency of
the key. This took ten seconds. When copying was done, we
had free access to the car.
Christian Skjødt of the Danish Insurance Information Service
said
...
"A stolen car radio will still be covered by the overall
insurance, but any stolen private properties such as clothes
or bags requires visible evidence of break-in to be reimbursed
by an insurance company," he explains.
...
Other computers with infrared ports may be programmed for
the same purpose. The vice president of marketing for 3Com
Denmark says that the Palm Pilot is able to open only the
older kind of car locks; newer model car locks will require a
notebook PC.
